# Variables and Formulas

**Definitions**

Formulas add, derive or extrapolate extra information from existing data in a universe. Formulas are used in many different parts of InfoView, including variables, function rows, pre-defined cells, conditional formatting, the formula editor in the function bar and as a way to hide cells or tables conditionally.

Formulas can be given a name and attributes that allow it to behave like an object (field) in a universe. This use of formulas is called a variable. Variables are the way that most users come in to contact with writing formulas for themselves, and they provide a great way to learn how formulas work. The guides in this section use variables as examples, but the central tenets of formulas and formula components remain the same, regardless of where the formula is being used.
